The found some films to be particularly effective for eliciting certain emotions, such as amusement, fear, contentment and sadness. One of the top scenes for amusement was a discussion of orgasm from “When Harry Met Sally” as well as Robin Williams comedy routine. Both clips are shown here.

On bodies as fractals, metabolism, breath and heartbeat.

“Metabolic rate per cell declines proportional to body mass to the power of −1/4, and life span increases at a rate proportional to body mass raised to the power of 1/4. This means that every cell, be it rat or rhino, burns approximately the same amount of energy in its lifetime. Heart rate also declines in line with relative metabolic rate, as the −1/4 power of body mass. At rest a mouse’s heart beats more than 500 times a minute. A shrew’s blood races out of its heart, around its body, and back to base in four seconds. Our blood takes nearly a minute to complete the same journey. An elephant’s heart beats about 30 times every minute. Other organs, such as the kidneys, also work much harder in smaller animals. Life spans vary proportionately. A mouse, even a pampered one in the lab, is unlikely to see three summers; an elephant can expect three score. This means that every mammal should get about the same number of heartbeats—about 1 billion. One recent, unserious, calculation put the number at 955,787,040. Likewise, each mammal will draw about 200 million breaths before it expires. This has become folk wisdom. The astronaut Neil Armstrong once remarked that he did not jog because he believed that God had given him a finite number of heart-beats and he would be damned if he was going to fritter them away running up and down the street. It almost looks as if every animal—every cell—has a certain amount of energy to burn, after which it dies.”

We depart from previous research on brokerage advantages in interorganizational networks by shifting focus to the dynamics of brokerage positions. We investigate causes of the disappearance of these positions and its influence on organizational performance. Using a subnetwork consisting of a broker and its two partners as the unit of analysis, we postulate that the brokerage position disappears either when the two partners develop ties or when the ties between the broker and the partners dissolve. We predict that the patterns of interactions in which this subnetwork is embedded exert multilevel influences on the disappearance, and that embedded structures promoting persistence constrain brokerage advantages. Our analysis of codeshare alliance data in the global airline industry supports the theory and demonstrates that the persistence of brokerage positions decreases broker performance. The findings explain why brokerage positions rarely persist and why the persistence of brokerage positions does not benefit brokers.

Mind-reading through embodied simulation. Scientific research on empathy.

Simulation theories of social cognition abound in the literature, but it is often unclear what simulation means and how it works. The discovery of mirror neurons, responding both to action execution and observation, suggested an embodied approach to mental simulation. Over the past few years this approach has been hotly debated and alternative accounts have been proposed. We discuss these accounts and argue that they fail to capture the uniqueness of embodied simulation ES. ES theory provides a unitary account of basic social cognition, demonstrating that people reuse their own mental states or processes represented with a bodily format in functionally attributing them to others.

Exploring the polysingularity of words, gestures, and states. 2009-present.

Polysingularity of Expression explores singularised multiplicity of words and gestures. The body is a dynamic networked system with multiple possible solutions, but only one is actualized at a time. Every such actualization brings with itself a multitude of meanings that point to how it could have been otherwise. I follow the threads of what’s possible, embrace subtle hints, accept dissonance, and embody multiple personalities to enrich our perception of individuation.

Polysingularity of Expression is an ongoing research that proposes to look at the body and communication as a dynamic network. Individuals, in this case, can be represented as a dissipated structure, a limit-cycle pattern formation in the network, which is undergoing non-equilibrium stability. The network includes not only the body or the conceptual knowledge of the individual, but also whatever comes in relation to them – both actual and virtual. This point of view is not too far away from radical embodied cognitive science, which denies representation in favor of constant response as an ongoing process of one’s own individuation. A slight change in conditions produces a different individuation, therefore maintaining a stable persona with a constant point of view is actually very hard work.

A lot of effort goes into gluing together the pieces of disparately perceived entities, translating them into each other, negotiating the differences, and accepting whatever is the result as the “real”. In order to make it easier we have habits and norms that help us find the common ground with other individuals who are facing the same challenge. Each expression, however, already contains a hint of vastness that originated it.

One only needs to zoom out and see the immediately available surrounding in order to multiply the possibilities. Shifting through states, physicality, contexts, and meanings is one such practice that allows to expose the crevices between hastily glued constructs. That’s why the monkeys like to pretend like they don’t give a fuck, although in fact they do. It’s a well-known fact that guerrillas are intelligent animals and that each male guerrilla has several uses for his hand. One can use a hand to grab, to grasp, to hold, to hang, to slap and so on and so forth. No matter what he’s going to tell you, avoid falling into the same trap. We all know that people have different political views and therefore it’s important to spell out these differences one by one in order to undertand them better. Difference. Difference… difference. Difference, difference difference, difference difference. It’s just difference. And the difference is that instead of trying to formulate the sentence I choose to stop here and now instead and to also express how infinitely grateful I am, really, that you made it this far. As you can see this whole thing is in the very beginning, but hopefully I can finally leave whatever the limitations I have and explore the freedom of embodied formation free of obligations, consequences, rules of grammar, speech, and time.

Using the framework of network analysis and data visualization, we produce the knowledge and software for education, collaboration, social network analysis, and community building. We also offer regular workshops and run several ongoing experiments as part of our research programme.

Polysingularity is a condition where multiple solutions are possible and only one is actuated at every specific moment of time. It is present in our bodies, behavior, cognition, social interactions, and societies. The framework of networks seems to have the most appropriate tools to describe and explore this complexity.

Nodus Labs uses polysingular approach to create text network diagrams, visually summarizing the pathways of meaning circulation in their multiplicity. We also produce research that can help maintain dynamic, sustainable, and innovative communities using social network analysis. Our award-winning online mnenomic network ThisIsLike.Com is a freely available tool that helps people retain and share their knowledge outside of the “filter bubble” intentionally created by the most popular web tools.

Nodus Labs is the associate member of Gephi Consortium and Education Otherwise homeschooling association. We participated in a2n and re:publica conferences, hosted workshops at betahaus, and talks at TEDx in Berlin.

A universe-wide locally-based campaign for the belief in fiction. 2011-present.

Be with me on this beautiful last pre-apocalyptic lapse of the universe before they tell us that even our own planet doesn’t exist. It’s been four years, but now I cannot do it alone anymore. Doesn’t matter what you think about Pluto, it’s the end of the sentence that really matters. That affirmative fuchsia dot that believes in believing and reaches the unattainable with all the fervor, knowing that it’s futile and still trying.

Pluto Bleibt is an ongoing research into the nature and inner working of protest movements. Taking its inspiration from Berlin campaigns to reclaim public spaces (Køpi Bleibt) and the recent protest movements (Occupy Wall Street in the US, For Fair Elections in Russia), Pluto Bleibt bases itself on the relentless belief in impossible fiction devoid of any ideological core. It’s a decentralized public action platform where the participants are invited to form networks, exchange resources and ideas, and propagate the message (symbolized by the fuchsia dot) using the public spaces, word-of-mouth, social networks, conferences, advertising, printed agitprop materials. Each fuchsia dot is a node in the spatio-temporal network of attention that we are trying to create. Pluto Bleibt is a campaign to draw lines between these dots and create polysingular entity that rejoices in its co-isolated multiplicity and yet insists on its specificity.

As of December 2011 there are more than 700 posters distributed around Berlin and a large group of people supporting the cause. The informational center that aggregates information about all the activities is available on www.plutobleibt.com.

An interesting article on The Guardian “Rioters say anger with police fuelled summer unrest” gives an insight on the workings of a riot. Some of the interesting findings are:

• Gangs were not so important in organizing the riots, they actually helped stop unrest;
• Facebook and Twitter did not play an important role in organizing the protests, however Blackberry’s BBM inter-device message system was extensively used;
• The riots were provoked by the years of latent police violence and spurred with the police shooting of Mark Duggan;
• One of the main motivations were to revenge the police, the excitement about suspension of normal rules, and a chance to take part in looting.

When people behave immorally according to their own standards, they feel bad. Rational people may therefore engage in less of an immoral activity than would be in their material self-interest. Despite this fact, I show that increasing people’s distaste for being immoral can increase the level of immoral activities. This can happen because of the psychological phenomenon of cognitive dissonance: people will feel pressure to convince themselves that immoral activities are in fact moral; if each person’s beliefs affect the beliefs of others, then increasing the pain from being immoral may cause members of society to convince each other that immoral activities are morally okay, and society will engage in more of such activities.

A group of Japanese neuroscientists is trying to peer into the mind — literally. They have devised a way to turn the brain’s opaque gray matter into a glassy, see-through substance.Enlarge This ImageAtsushi MiyawakiThe group, based at the government-financed Riken Brain Science Institute in Wako, Japan, has created an inexpensive chemical cocktail that transforms dead biological tissue from a colored mass into what looks like translucent jelly. Soaking brain tissue in the solution makes it easier for neuroscientists to see what’s inside, a step they hope will uncover the physical basis of personality traits, memories and even consciousness.“I’m very excited about the potential,” said Dr. Atsushi Miyawaki, a researcher on the team, which published its discovery in the journal Nature Neuroscience. The chemical solution — patented under the name Scale, a phonetic approximation of the Japanese word for “transparent” — could help neuroscientists map the brain’s underlying architecture, though that goal is still a distant one. At the moment, researchers are working to build such a map, called a “connectome,” of mouse brains, which are far less complex than human ones.

In clinical trials, new drugs are often compared to older treatments, but sometimes they’re also compared to placebos—inert treatments that ought to have no effect. Except that’s not what happens. The placebo effect can actually be pretty strong, and even more strangely, placebos can work even when the patient knows they’re being given one.

Most of what we know about placebos results from studies on how we process pain, since it’s more ethical to give someone a placebo instead of a painkiller than it would be to replace an anti-cancer drug or insulin. Some of the analgesic (painkilling) effect of placebo treatment is due to endogenous opioids, ones made by the body. Now, evidence has emerged that suggests an additional effect results from the cannabinoid pathway, according to a publication in Nature Medicine.

According to our model, high-cost groups achieve long-term stability within a larger population under a wide range of circumstances, a finding that extends Henrich’s result in a more realistic direction. The most important emergent pathway to costly group stability is the simultaneous presence of high charisma and consistency of the group leader and high cost of the group. These findings have strategic implications both for leading groups committed to costly beliefs and practices and for controlling their size and influence within wider cultural settings.

Practicing costly behavior and the high price of entrance in a group may serve as a strong unifying factor for a community.

“The existence of costly religious rituals such as male circumcision, food and water deprivation, and even consumption of toxic substances (see for example Snake handling) has presented a paradox for evolutionary scientists. In this sense, devout religious belief appears to be a maladaptive trait (Tuzin 1982). Many evolutionary psychologists have proposed that religion arose as a means of increasing and maintaining intragroup cooperation (Steadman and Palmer 2008). Cooperation is the basis of the social organization of humans and leads to altruistic behavior (Bulbulia 2004). Costly signalling helps promote altruistic behavior because expensive signals provide information about an individual’s quality (Zahavi 1975).

Irons (2001) proposes that all religions involve costly and elaborate rituals, which are performed publicly, in order to demonstrate loyalty and commitment to other members of the religious group. In this way, group members increase their allegiance to the group by signalling that they are invested in promoting group interests as well as being able to easily identify other members. However, as group size increases among humans, the threat of free riders grows as well (Barrett et al. 2002). CST accounts for this by proposing that these religious rituals are costly enough to deter free riders from benefiting from the collective production of religious goods (Iannaccone 1992).

Following the failure of a wide range of attempts to solve the crystal structure of M-PMV retroviral protease by molecular replacement, we challenged players of the protein folding game Foldit to produce accurate models of the protein. Remarkably, Foldit players were able to generate models of sufficient quality for successful molecular replacement and subsequent structure determination. The refined structure provides new insights for the design of antiretroviral drugs.

The neurons are located in a brain region called the amygdala, which is important for the processing of emotions. However, the study results strengthen a growing belief among researchers that the amygdala has also a more general role in processing and learning about social stimuli such as faces.

“Our interpretation of this initially puzzling effect is that the brain cares about representing the entire face, and needs to be highly sensitive to anything wrong with the face, like a part missing,” explains Ralph Adolphs, senior author on the study and Bren Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience and professor of biology at Caltech. “This is probably an important mechanism to ensure that we do not mistake one person for another and to help us keep track of many individuals.”

Real life networks are known to have “small world” quality: loosely connected clusters of densely connected individuals. Once you’re stuck inside a cluster, the structure itself starts to dictate its own ethics and its own rules of behavior to you. The only way to escape this instrumentalization is to be a free agent, to float freely between various communities, like a bee. The example of a bee is an important one, because the flowers need the bee to live. In the same way there should be something that you bring to each community that you temporarily become a part of. We will use as an example some real communities and explore various implications of promiscuous behavior within them.
&nsbp;
The event takes place at People in Beta festival at betahaus in Berlin on the 1st of October at 13.30 (4th floor conference room).

A review on Pitchfork at N+1 Magazine

“[D]id these bands suck? Was there something that Pitchfork had missed? Although Broken Social Scene, Arcade Fire, Sufjan Stevens, M.I.A., and Animal Collec- tive all produced sophisticated, intelligent music, it’s also true that they focused their sophistication and intelligence on those areas where the stakes were lowest. Instead of striking out in pursuit of new musical forms, they tweaked or remixed the sounds of earlier music, secure in the knowledge that pedantic blog writers would magnify these changes and make them seem daring. Instead of producing music that challenged and responded to that of other bands, they complimented one another in interviews, each group “doing its own thing” and appreciating the efforts of others. So long as they practiced effective management of the hype cycle, they were given a free pass by their listeners to lionize childhood, imitate their predecessors, and respond to the Iraq war with dancing. The general mood was a mostly benign form of cultural decadence.”

“Pitchfork couldn’t develop intelligence on the individual level because the site’s success depended largely on its function as a kind of opinion barome- ter: a steady, reliable, unsurprising accretion of taste judgments. Fully developed crit- ics have a tendency to surprise themselves, and also to argue with one another, and not just over matters of taste—they fight about the real stuff. This would have undermined Pitchfork’s project.”

“That project—an ever evolving, uncon- troversial portrait of contemporary tastes in popular music—addressed one problem sur- rounding music in the file-sharing era to the exclusion of all others. Faced with readers who wanted to know how to be fans in the internet age, Pitchfork’s writers became the greatest, most pedantic fans of all, reconfig- uring criticism as an exercise in perfect cul- tural consumption. Pitchfork’s endless “Best Of” lists should not be read as acts of criti- cism, but as fantasy versions of the Billboard sales charts. Over the years, these lists have (ominously) expanded, from fifty songs to
100 or 200, and in 2008 the site published a book called The Pitchfork 500: Our Guide to the Greatest Songs from Punk to the Pres- ent. Similarly, Pitchfork’s obsession with identifying bands’ influences seems histori- cal, but isn’t. When a pop critic talks about influences, he’s almost never talking about the historical development of musical forms. Instead, he’s talking about his record col- lection, his CD-filled binders, his external hard drive—he is congratulating himself, like James Murphy in “Losing My Edge,” on being a good fan. While Pitchfork may be invaluable as an archive, it is worse than useless as a forum for insight and argument.”

“What did we do to deserve Pitchfork? The answer lies in indie rock itself.
In the last thirty years, no artistic form has made cultural capital so central to its identity, and no musical genre has better understood how cultural capital works. Dis- daining the reserves of actual capital that were available to them through the major labels, indie musicians sought a competi- tive advantage in acquiring cultural capital instead.”

“This makes it worth pausing, just for a moment, over Animal Collective’s most famous lyric: “I don’t mean to seem like I care about material things.” The ethical lyric to sing would be, “I don’t want to be some- one who cares about material things,” but in indie rock today the worst thing would be just to seem like a materialistic person.
You can learn a lot about indie rock, its fans, and Pitchfork from the words “mean to seem like.””

“Pitchfork and indie rock are currently run by people who behave as though the endless effort to perfect the habits of cultural consumption
is the whole experience of life. We should leave these things behind, and instead pursue and invent a musical culture more worth our time.”

‘To make an atlas’, Didi-Huberman writes in the exhibition press release, ‘is to reconfigure space, to redistribute it, in short, to redirect it: to dismantle it where we thought it was continuous; to reunite it where we thought there were boundaries’

‘Close to slapstick, Latham’s film oscillates between an attempt at the accumulation of the (supposedly) entire knowledge of an epoch and an absolute nonsense. Such a paradox could be appropriately connected with Jacques Derrida’s book Mal d’archive (Archive Fever), published in 1995,11 when the World Wide Web and digital technologies were still nascent. Derrida identifies the Kafkaesque, immeasurable and uncontrollable urge to register every single thing, word or image in archives – here presented as an atlas, after a process of decision and selection – while at the same time giving scope to the desire for ruin and blindness that permanently haunts this romantic, vital and limitless excess.’

Their music is a diverse mix of influences, rhythms and sudden BPM shifts completely redefining the hip-hop genre, bringing it in sync with the second decade of the XXI century. The best way to describe it is to imagine what would happen if Bedouins herded beats instead of goats somewhere in Seattle instead of the Atlas Mountains.

„So it seems to be a contemporary move and a clever reminder of long told stories. Repackaged and relayered down to the roots of the tribe of shabazz. And it’s the question of guidance which is brought up against the cleverness of our scientific now. The questions haven’t changed. Black up pluto while the mad scientists are busy mining historical skies. It’s layered. And you have to be a forward thinker to rearrange the digable planets of former times.”

In this workshop I will demonstrate how one can visualize and analyze a social network or a community (using an example from Facebook selected by the participants). We will find out how to identify the most influential nodes within a network, various subgroups within a community, and the most efficient communication strategies to spread information within a group.

We will also discuss what behavior within the network fosters stronger ties between the members and a more sustainable community.

I will use free open-source Gephi software for this demonstration, so it’s highly recommended you download and install it before the session from www.gephi.org

Some thoughts on the talk hosted at WOW / Sommer.Bar at Tanz Im August

Berlin is known for its thriving alternative scene. Dozens of festivals that are now acclaimed worldwide have been started here on pure enthusiasm with no external support, such as DMY for design or Transmediale for experimental art and music. Myriads of artist-run initiatives have been operating below the radar of media with no institutional support, bringing together hundreds of artists and thousands of spectators every year. There are amazing night clubs that create extraordinary experiences on a weekly basis without recourse to the government funds, theoretical discourse on “the coming community”, or even drugs for that matter.

This city is well known for the unique ability of its residents to put together resources and make something of nothing, running on a mix of fanaticism, passion, shared skills, collaboration, and dedication to what they really love, that is, their art, their music, their beliefs. There are decades of experience and knowledge there and I’m sure that all these people have very interesting things to share.

And yet, when it comes to presenting all this within the frame of quite a well-known Berlin festival for contemporary dance, we suddenly pretend like all this has never really existed. We praise ourselves and our friends for how self-organized and great we are without realising that there’s a universe around us where others have been doing the same thing with much less resources for a much longer time and quite successfully, too.

The “WOW” talk on alternative artist initiatives hosted at Sommer.Bar as a part of Tanz Im August 2011 festival on the 20th of August has shown just that. The people who were invited mainly related to the dance field and the main criteria for participation seemed to depend more on how often these very people hang out at dance events rather than their achievements in Berlin’s alternative arts scene. When PLAYBerlin received the last-minute invitation to take part I was genuinely surprised looking at the list of the participants for the talk. There are hundreds of other people based in Berlin who’ve done hundred times more than any of us ever did and who can share much more interesting information – and none of them were featured in the program.

Yes, PLAYBerlin has been active for 3 years already, we’ve organised more than 30 events and presented around 60 artists to the overall audiences of +4000 people. But still, we are just babies in this field of self-organized artist initiatives. So were the other invited participants – with all my respect to them and what they do – we are all just starting, aren’t we? Shouldn’t we be more humble then and try to look outside of our immediate circles of friends, beyond the dance field, to really learn something new, to expand our field of knowledge, to go beyond what we think is possible?

So to me it was a huge curatorial mistake on the part of the organisers. It’s just a symptom of any scene that gets too hermetic: at some point you just stop looking outside and focus on your own little world. The problems of funding, institutions, sustainability, community… All these buzzwords should have made us sick long time ago. There are so many more things, people, initiatives and scenes to be inspired by.

Why not make an extra effort and look beyond the familiar faces, do the research, meet new people, bring in some new influences into the dance field that actually badly needs it? Why do we always see the same faces and like to talk to each other about how great we are, instead of realising that we have lots of things to learn and get to know people who could help us grow?

That’s why on my part I felt it would be more fair to invite some of the people I know who did much more than us for the artists in Berlin and who could really share valuable knowledge about how it’s done outside of the dance field: Seamus O’Donnel who’s co-organised Salon Bruit experimental music nights for 6 years now and Jorn Burmester from Performer Stammtisch who co-created a grass-roots performers network in Berlin now known worldwide. Their presentations were very inspiring to me mainly because they both showed that you can do a lot just for the love of what you do, without any concern for “visibility”, “sustainability”, institutional politics and funding cuts.

These are the true alternative artist initiatives because they operate on the desire of people to express themselves, their economy is not based on writing sophisticated texts to get funding. They are in there for a different reason and their initiative comes from a different place.

Personally, I find it very inspiring especially for all those fields spoiled by institutional support and thus closely intertwined with the current political agenda. Yes, you can never escape it, for sure, and you’ve got to fight for your rights. But when it all comes down to saying WOW to each other for being able to pull off an alternative event in the midst of your residency-festival-hopping lifestyle and complaining the rest of the time about the unbearable conditions for work, then to me it’s more about some sort of collective ego-boosting than anything else. I would just be happy if that session was more about sharing that you can do something great when you have friends, passion, and no resources. This is inspiring enough and let’s not make ourselves out to be visionaries, priests, and heros just because we organized a couple of events with no support. But if we talk about “alternative artist initiatives” I believe there’s much more work to be done and many more things to learn.

Text-based work exploring the polysingularity of OK.

“it’s ok” is part of Keeping the Connection performance series, exploring the polysingularity of word and gesture. “it’s ok” is the exploration of possibilities contained within a single word, movement, or gesture guided by the affirmative drive. “it’s ok” is ok when it repeats, because it constantly reiterates itself, flowing through associations freely, fitting into any context and because of that it is always ok even when it’s not ok.</em

When “ok” repeats, it brings into play the complex field of relations that it originates in space and time, the phase space, the network of word-gestures that is continuously morphing. The present, the past, the audience, the performer, the animal, the word, the context, the expectation, the movement, the choreography… The only invariant is the constant affirmation, which produces the possibility for the continuous action and sustained attention. It demonstrates the pure affirmative driving force contained within any narrative when it’s not subject to any power relations or external agenda, but is instead allowed to move freely through the multiple possibilities that never are but are always becoming. The constant affirmation celebrates instability, transversal movement, and fluidity as the vehicles for self-perpetuation.

Likewise, there is an idea that these great American companies, Facebook and Twitter, gave the Egyptian people this revolution and liberated Egypt. But the most popular guide for the revolutionaries was a document that spread throughout the soccer clubs in Egypt, which themselves were the most significant revolutionary community groups. If you read this document, you see that on the first page it says to be careful not to use Twitter and Facebook as they are being monitored. On the last page: do not use Twitter or Facebook. That is the most popular guide for the Egyptian revolution. And then we see Hillary Clinton trying to say that this was a revolution by Twitter and Facebook.

The front page of The New York Times says something and they react to that. Find what is newsworthy and tell the public that it is newsworthy. That’s the generous interpretation, but I think the main factor, however, for those who are not professional writers, and perhaps many who are, is simply that they use their writing to advertise their values as conforming to those of their paper. The aim of most non-professional writers is to take the cheapest possible content that permits them to demonstrate their value of conformity to the widest possible selection of the group that they wish to gain the favor of.
So if you think about citations when using URLs, if we make an intellectual work, we stand on the shoulders of giants, which we all do, and we cite our influences in some way—not necessarily in a formal academic sense, but we simply refer to them by linking to the original thing you were looking at. URLs are an example of how we become intellectually dependent on this citation mechanism. But if that citation mechanism is actually like plasticine, and it is decaying all around us—if oligarchs and billionaires are in there ripping out bits of history, or connections between one part of history and another, because it interferes with their agenda—then the intellectual constructs that we are building up about our civilization are being built on something that is unstable. We are building an intellectual scaffold for civilization out of plasticine.
And with islands, you can often get new legislation going very quickly because the economy is small enough that you don’t have a whole lot of lobbyists keeping it down. I mentioned this on the biggest Sunday political show in Iceland, and the next day everyone was talking about it. It was clear that a number of Icelanders would also support such a move. I came back and we brought in some thirteen different legislative consultants to think about different ways of pulling it all together. As I was coming from the outside, it was necessary for Icelanders to make the idea their own, or it would never succeed legislatively. It had to become endemic to Iceland. So I worked hard to do this and we got a draft proposal, in Icelandic, put to the Parliament. Then a Parliamentary order was made for the government to draft the legislation, and it passed through the Parliament unanimously.

There was an idea floating around that continuously following the first link of any Wikipedia article will eventually lead to “Philosophy.” (See the tooltip by hovering over the cartoon at xkcd which is said to be the source of this observation.) This sounded like a reasonable assertion, one that makes a certain amount of sense in retrospect: any description of something will typically use more general terms. Following that idea will eventually lead… somewhere.

A suspended polysingular act of love towards the environment. 2011 - present.

Developed during Diego Agullo’s and Dmitry Paranyushkin’s residency at PACT Zollverein coalmines in 2011, The Humping Pact is a tribute to dysfunctional spaces that still emanate creative potential. Our polysingular coming together is an attempt to build an intimate and personal relationship with space, being loyal to its demands and dedicated within our efforts. Presented as a multi-screen video installation.

“Residence is, immunologically speaking, a defensive measure designed to demarcate a sphere of well-being from invaders and other agents of unwellness’ [...] Constructing a residence is, in other words, a ‘preventive measure’ that establishes a physical border between the protected interior and the potentially dangerous exterior.”

“There is the translation of an existing space into an operative space defined less by a configuration of positions than by qualities of potential movement. By that we mean that it is defined by ability to irrupt unexpectedly, to break out of or to break into the existing spatial grid, anywhere, at any moment. This irruptive potential enables a completely new and different pattern of movement that is not on the grid, but flows through it following different principles of circulation, and implying a different repertory of tactics.”

The Humping Pact intends to cover every place that emanates unrealized creative potential around the world. Starting at Zollverein coalmines in Essen, Germany, we travel the world to find more landscapes. The project is entirely supported by the network of contributors.

“Zollverein Coal Mine in Ruhr region of Germany, where the first videos of The Humping Pact were filmed, has a very interesting history. After the second World War it was the largest industrial center of that kind in Europe, but in 1986 it was closed and declared a memorial. In 2001 the whole former mine was declared to be UNESCO World Heritage Sight.
Since the closure of the mines there have been numerous debates on the local and national level about the future of the region. How to bring in the new potential, resuscitate the area around, and make it more attractive for the cultural and business activities.

In this regard, Paragullo’s act of humping and loving the space is a direct response to this discourse. They believe that the environment can be saved and revitalized through building a very personal and intimate relation to it. By harnessing the immense sexual energy inherent in every human being and channeling its creative potential into the strong and beautiful man-made geometrical structures, they offer their tribute to history, to architecture, to technology, to art, to science, and to the region and its people.
This collective action of humping transcends the intended use of the space, fertilizing it with dedication and belief – the universal currency of transformation and change.”

Algorithms rule the world: stock trading, shopping recommendations, and everyday communication are aincreasingly controlled by artificial intelligence mechanisms. They function on the basis of efficiency and rationality therefore excluding any possibility of polysingularity. This transforms both our society and our minds, turning us into AI’s extension. I engage on a series of interviews with that emerging entity in order to find the human in it.

BOOK #1: AMAZON REMEMBERS

For one year I’ve been taking photographs of anything I could find around me on my iPhone. These photographs were then submitted to Amazon Remembers application, which promises to find the best match to the photo on Amazon.Co.Uk online shop.

In the manual to the application it says that a mix of artificial intelligence and human labor is used in the matching process.

When artificial intelligence falls short of recognizing the suitable product, the image gets sent to MechanicalTurk.Com. This website is owned and run by Amazon and is mainly used by the the companies who want to post routine jobs and by the people mainly from China and India who are willing to perform them. Each job is called a “hit” and brings a few cents to the person who performs it. Amazon calls the people who do the “hits” on Mechanical Turk “Artificial Articial Intelligence”.

This 218-page book catalogues our interactions in chronological order. On the left side of the page is the image I sent to Amazon, on the right side of the page is the image and text I received in return, usually within seconds or minutes.

The book is available on display at bbooks and Motto Distribution in Berlin, as well as Amazon online store.
